Some of you may think that Gypsum plastering is a new and emerging technology in the construction field, but actually, it is as old as the ancient pyramids, about 3000 years. Gypsum is a soft sulfate material composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate that’s widely used as a fertilizer, in sculptures & as a plaster material. Gypsum is available in a powdered form, appears like a white chalk material, and is extremely light in weight.

Popular Uses of Gypsum Plaster

  • Gypsum plasterboards are used as false ceilings that give your home an elegant appearance. It is easy to install, more efficient and leaves less residue and dirt.
  • Gypsum plaster is more effective and is used to eliminate shrinkage cracks, making it a better alternative to other plasters.
  •  Gypsum plaster is mostly used for quick construction. No curing time is required, unlike traditional cement plaster. It saves both time and water.
  • It is Used for better interior finishing. Gypsum plaster walls give perfectly lined, leveled, smooth walls and perfect right-angled corners.

Gypsum Plaster V/S Plaster of Paris (PoP)

Occurrence: Gypsum plaster is a naturally occurring mineral and Plaster of Paris is a man-made material.

Chemical name: The chemical name of gypsum is known as calcium sulfate dihydrate and PoP is known as calcium sulfate hemihydrate.

Forms: The availability of gypsum plaster is easy and ready to install. Whereas Pop comes in powdered form.

Design and aesthetics: Gypsum plaster can only be achieved in square or rectangular shapes or designs, but from PoP, any design or shape can be achieved.

Molding: Gypsum can’t be molded into any different shapes and in the case of PoP, it can be molded into different shapes if mixed with water.

Finishing: The gypsum plasterboards offer a clean and furnished look to the ceilings. Pop doesn’t have the same finesse as that of the Gypsum Boards.

False Ceiling: Gypsum plasterboards are easy to install for false ceilings and also as partition walls in offices. On the other hand, to make a PoP false ceiling, the paste is applied to the chicken mesh to add mechanical strength. The pop ceiling is seamless and moldable.

Strength: Gypsum plaster has more strength as compared to plaster of Paris. PoP is weaker.

Durability: Gypsum has less durability than PoP. Its maximum lifespan is 5 years and PoP has more durability with a lifespan of 10 -15 years.
